Statsdot or Matomo?
Updated October 13, 2026
Matomo is the closest thing to Google Analytics without Google: a complete analytics suite, open source, that you can install on your own server or buy as a cloud service. Statsdot is much smaller. The question is how much of Matomo you would really use.
The short version
| Statsdot | Matomo | |
|---|---|---|
| Cookies | None | First-party cookies by default; a cookieless mode exists |
| Consent banner in the EU | Usually not needed for analytics | Needed unless configured for the CNIL exemption |
| Hosting | Hosted by us in the EU | Self-hosted (free) or Matomo Cloud (data stored in Europe) |
| Entry price (cloud) | Free up to 10,000 pageviews; Pro 9 € a month | From 29 a month excl. tax, 50,000 hits |
| Heatmaps, recordings, A/B tests | No | Yes (premium features) |
| Ecommerce, funnels, user profiles | No | Yes |
| Setup | One line of code | One line of code, plus a server if self-hosted |
Matomo facts checked on matomo.org on 13 October 2026. Matomo counts "hits", which include pageviews, events, downloads and outbound clicks; Statsdot counts only pageviews towards the limit.
When Matomo is the right tool
- You need heatmaps, session recordings or A/B tests.
- You run an online shop and want revenue and product reports.
- Company policy says the analytics software must run on your own servers.
- You have someone who will maintain the server, updates and database.
When Statsdot is enough
Most small businesses look at a handful of numbers: visitors, top pages, where people come from and whether they convert. For that, a suite with dozens of reports is more than you need, and every feature adds settings to understand and, if you host it, a server to keep up to date.
Statsdot gives you those numbers on one screen, without cookies by default and without a server to run.
Privacy
Matomo can be very privacy-friendly, but you have to configure it: anonymise IP addresses, switch to cookieless tracking and disable the features that need personal data. Statsdot never stores IP addresses or cookies in the first place, so there is nothing to configure.
Questions
Can Matomo run without a consent banner?
Yes, if you configure it to meet the French CNIL exemption, which also turns off features such as heatmaps, session recordings, user IDs and the visits log. Statsdot works that way by default.
